Dry needling is similar to acupuncture in that we use similar needles. However, the aim is different from that of acupuncture as we know it from traditional Chinese medicine.

Dry needling is about influencing local trigger points in your muscles. The dry needling therapist identifies your trigger points and pricks them with a sterile disposable needle. This needle is "dry", which means that nothing is injected under the skin. After the prick, your muscle contracts and relaxes immediately, which we call a local twitch reaction.

This reaction causes the muscle to release built-up tension, which is precisely the aim of dry needling treatment. Patients often experience this as a releasing and relieving "pain".

No. As no substances are injected with the needles (hence "dry" needling) and the treatment takes place directly under the surface of the skin, dry needling is absolutely harmless to the body. The usual after-effects of the treatment, such as the feeling of a dull aching in the treated areas and the sensation of sore muscles, are merely signals that the treatment has worked and that the body is working due to the stimulation of the trigger points.

If you are interested, your therapist will be happy to tell you more about the possibilities of a dry needling treatment for your therapy and you can choose dry needling as a method for your treatment.
